NEW ROAD RULES BECAME MANDATORY IN THE ACT FROM 15th MARCH 2011
Children must stay in a restraint until 7 Years of age. Drivers who do not ensure all children in their vehicle are properly secured are liable for substantial fines and will incur demerit points
The type of child restraint a child must use is determined by age:
0 – 6 months: Rear facing child restraint
6 months – 4 years: Rear facing child restraint OR Forward facing child restraint with in-built harness
4 years – 7 years: Forward facing child restraint with in-built harness OR Booster seat (with full seatbelt or a harness)
If you believe your child is too big for their age-appropriate seat, contact Kidsafe.
The new road rules also determine when a child can sit in the front seat:
Under 4 years: Children must not sit in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows of seats (i.e. the average sedan)
4 years – 7 years: Children must not sit in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows of seats unless all other seats are being used by children under 7 years. In this case the child may travel in the front seat but must use a booster seat and properly fastened and adjusted seatbelt.
