Wind warning for the ACT and Flood warning for Queanbeyan

Posted on September 3, 2010 by by valerirojas

The ACT State Emergency Service (ACTSES) has called on the community to be prepared with a wet and windy weekend in the ACT, Queanbeyan and surrounding region.

The following information comes from the ESA site.

“The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall tomorrow with strong winds into Sunday and have issued a ‘Flood Watch’ for the surrounding NSW region,” ACTSES Chief Officer Tony Graham said.

“The ‘Flood Watch’ advice is that local flooding is possible for the Queanbeyan and Molonglo Rivers in surrounding NSW during Saturday,” he said.

“Even though the ACT is not expected to be impacted with heavy flooding, the forecast of heavy rainfall could mean we receive something in the order of 30 – 50 millimetres of rainfall with possible localised flooding.

“Strong southerly winds are also forecast to occur in the ACT over the weekend with possible gusts up to 65km/h.

“With the wet and windy conditions forecast, the ACTSES is reminding the community to exercise caution during any possible flooding, to secure loose items around the home and beware of undertaking any repairs on rooftops if strong winds continue.

The ACTSES has placed units on a higher level of readiness to respond to any problems as a result of the expected wet and windy weather.

“Over 200 ACTSES volunteers are on standby across the Territory, as are our counterparts in the surrounding region of NSW, ready to come to the community’s aid if required. Our volunteers are well trained to deal with these types of situations 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year,” Mr Graham said.

“Residents who are affected by the moderate to heavy rainfall and need emergency assistance can call the ACTSES on 132 500,” he said.

“It is very important people also stay away from running water, whether it is in well established open drains or circumstances created by a heavy downpour.”
