Expired infant formula discounted

Posted on August 7, 2010 by by racer

About a month ago, I was in Victoria and entered a Coles supermarket to purchase some infant formula.  The formula we buy is Karicare HA Gold as this is the most suitable for our child.  The batch that I have been able to find in most supermarkets held an expiry date of the 21 July 2010.  Several days prior to this date, the formula in the Victorian Coles supermarket became discounted and clearly marked as a quick sale.  I have no real issue with this.  My issue is that today I entered a Coles supermarket in Canberra, to purchase the formula, only to discover that they had discounted it to about $23.00, from the usual price of about $28.00).  At first I thought this was great, until I started to check the expiry date.  Almost 2/3 of the tins they had in stock actually expired on the 21 July 2010.  That’s right!  How deeply generous and caring of this giant supermarket chain to discount expired formula.  You can not put a price on the health of your child, and this formula should have been removed from the shelves.  What disappointed me the most about this, was that several weeks ago, I entered this particular Canberra store and advised the customer service employee that the formula was due to expire within 2 days and there was no way I was going to buy formula that was that old.  I then requested an order for more formula that would be in date.  Today I was only able to find a couple of tins with an expiry date of Nov 2010 with the majority being expired.

Something has got to be done about supermarkets trying to sell expired foods!  These large chains hold a monopoly on the market – surely I am not the only one who likes to put the health of my family first!

I had the same problem at a local store in ACT. My husband went back and spoke with the store manager. Baby food should not be sold after the expiry date at all.

I noticed that with another Coles in Canberra as well today. I went in and most of the Karicare HA Gold + expired last month. Are they doing this in all Coles stores? selling expired formula is like selling expired milk.
