Melbourne ATM skimming – Know what to do
Posted on July 30, 2010 by by valerirojas
Victoria Police are warning bank customers to familiarise themselves with skimming devices to ensure they don’t fall victim of the recent ATM scams in Melbourne.
About 28 ATMs around greater Melbourne have been targeted since March this year, with losses expected to be in the millions, police said.
Police have also seized 10 skimming devices and are working closely with other states and banks to identify and disrupt those involved.
Police are advising consumers to -
• Try to use the same ATM or same type of ATM
• Recognise what to look for to identify a skimming device:
(Pinhole camera above screen – after market add-ons that don’t look like they belong)
(Card entry point – clear continuous row of lights – no lights missing or obscured)
• Cover your hand when typing your PIN
• Regularly check your bank balance
• Immediately notify your bank and change your PIN if you believe your card may have been skimmed
• Report suspicious activity or suspect devices at ATMs to your bank or police
Police are urging anyone who has been a victim of ATM skimming or recognises the men pictured below to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au
