Is Telstra ripping Australian customers off with the new HTC Desire plan?

Posted on July 2, 2010 by by Valeri

htc_desireIt seems to me that some Telstra representatives don’t really understand or are aware of their own mobile phone plans and therefore are ripping off their Australian customers, well at least their Canberra customers.

Last Friday 25th of June, I went to the Canberra Centre Telstra shop to ask about the new Google Android – HTC Desire plans, as I just wanted to renew my now expired $50 cap plan I asked about the new $50 cap plan on the HTC Desire, I was told I could get a new $49 plan which included 200 mb of data but if I wanted to get the HTC Desire I had to pay an extra $10 per month. I decided to go home and come back later.

About a week later (1st July), Telstra announced they would put their cap plan down for the HTC Desire, so people could now get the HTC Desire phone as part of the $49 cap plan inclusive.

I thought that was great and so I went to the Canberra Centre Telstra shop today at lunch time (2nd of July), I was then served by a Telstra representative who told me if I wanted the HTC Desire on the $49 plan I had to pay an extra $16 per month for the phone. I questioned what I was told and even Googled results on the new Telstra plan, we landed on a few media websites with information about the new Telstra plans but I was told that these sites (traditional media websites) were misleading people and if I wanted the phone I would have to pay and extra $16 per month. So it wasn’t $49 plus $10 as I was told the previous week any more but $49 plus $16 per month. I decided not to take the plan and call up their Telstra Hotline.

After speaking to the Telstra Hotline representative I was assure that the plan had indeed change to $49 cap plan which included the phone and that the Telstra shop representative was wrong and I was right.
I then decided to call the Canberra City Telstra shop and explained what had happened at the shop earlier today. I was told not every Telstra representative at the shop knew of the new plan because the plan was only announced by Telstra yesterday.

Anyway, that fixed the problem and I was told to pick up my phone, I did go back to get it later in the afternoon but when I got there they had no phones left.

So I didn’t get the new HTC Desire or paid $66 dollars for the plan either, but what about all the other people who have gone into the shop without knowing anything about the new plan? Have they paid $49 cap plan plus $10 or $16 for the phone? I think Telstra has some explaining to do.

So if you bought your new HTC Desire phone from a Telstra dealer today just make sure you are only paying $49 for your plan including the phone.

The same thing happened to me, except it was at the Woden store on Friday. I went around the corner to JB Hi-Fi and they put me on the $49 cap with the Desire inclusive with out an issue.

    Telstra shops are just crap
