Canberra Restaurants – are they all as dodgy?

Posted on June 17, 2010 by by valerirojas

The Canberra Times is running a report where a Dickson restaurant ‘Tak Kee Roast Inn’ was fined $1500 after they were caught with meat defrosting and vegetables being prepared in a car park behind the Woolley Street restaurant on February 26, 2009. Full report

The food was unattended on a chopping board, exposed to the weather and attracting wild birds, so the health inspector took photographs and phoned her superior, who sent another staff member to help her investigate.

When the pair went inside, they noted that the kitchen walls, floors and ceiling were dirty and that there was grease, decaying food and rubbish throughout the premises. They seized a large wooden chopping block, rusty knife and defrosting and cooked meat on the grounds that it posed an immediate health risk.

But is this as bad as it can get in Canberra? I remember ordering a pizza from a restaurant a few weeks ago and found a piece of clear plastic in it, sure it wasn’t a cockroach but I could have swollen it as well, a few weeks later and I still don’t understand how a piece of plastic ended up in my pizza?.

So, have you had any awful food experiences at restaurants in Canberra? or have you heard of restaurants in your local community following dodgy OH&S and food standards?

Yes, i had dinner at a restaurant in Manuka one time and i received my drink with a fly in it and my salad had frozen tomatoes. I had mentioned to the staff but was ignored. Another time friends and i went to an overly priced meat restaurant in civic and when our dishes arrived, my friend’s chips were still literally frozen. He was so mad that he got the waitress and told him but they did not care.

I must say $1500 is a very small price to pay
