Australian Police corrects Australian newspaper on Facebook claims

Posted on June 5, 2010 by by valerirojas

This is an interesting argument that hasn’t been picked up by enough media today. Saturday 5 June 2010

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) says that an article in the Weekend Australian newspaper Saturday 5 June 2010 titled Facebook urged to ban teen tributes has incorrectly claimed that the  (AFP) are seeking to prohibit persons under 18 years of age from setting up Facebook memorial sites.

The AFP says specially, the article states “the AFP has, in an effort to improve accountability, raised with Facebook the possibility of banning under-18s from setting up such sites”.

From the Australian: The Australian Federal Police are now negotiating with the social networking giant to prevent future acts of cyber-vandalism by so-called internet “trolls”, who post offensive material to provoke outrage.

The AFP are telling us that at no time they have raised this issue with representatives from Facebook, nor has it ever suggested that this would be an effective strategy in dealing with misuse of online social networking sites.

The promotion of cyber safety and e-security have always been priority areas for the AFP, and its High Tech Crime Operations Team continues to work in partnership with Facebook, who are receptive to approaches from law enforcement agencies.

The AFP continues to work closely with Facebook on behalf the Australian law enforcement community.

The AFP’s primary concern is to ensure that all social networking sites maintain the privacy and safety of Australian users. AFP media release

I haven’t seen any comments from the Australian regarding the claims yet, if you have feel free to share the link.
