“It is believed the Melbourne based students were on a weekend trip to the Island and decided to go for a swim in t shirts and shorts, when the drama unfolded around 4pm.”
After 10 minutes of swimming three of the students became fatigued and found themselves caught in rip current.
A local surfer noticed the trio in difficulty and paddled to their assistance, placing one of the men who had taken in water and was losing consciousness on his board and in to shore. The surfer then returned to the water to assist the remaining two. Police reported
A 19-year-old Carlton man was taken to the Wonthaggi District Hospital suffering hypothermia, while his two friends were treated by paramedics at the scene.
