Non-profit group takes over ABC Learning childcare centres
Posted on May 31, 2010 by by emd
I’ve been reading in newspapers today that the GoodStart consortium (a non-profit group made up of The Brotherhood of St Laurence, Social Ventures Australia, Mission Australia, and The Benevolent Society) have been given a seven-year, interest-free, $15 million loan from the Federal Government to buy out 678 of the 705 ABC Learning childcare centres.
This means that for 62,000 families and 15,000 ABC Learning staff, their centres will stay open. It also means the centres are run as community childcare centres by a non-profit provider, and no longer need to return profits to public shareholders.
In Canberra, the childcare centres to be taken over by GoodStart include ABC Learning in Garran. I’m not sure which other centres are affected, but they may include an ABC Learning centre in Queanbeyan, and the centre popular with Defence families at Russell.

That is great news, 62,000 families and 15,000 ABC Learning staff is a lot of people for sure.
