Shop Handmade opening in 7 sleeps!

As a regular shopper at the Handmade Markets, I’m very excited about the opening of Shop Handmade at 9am on Friday 16 April. It’s next door to Design-A-Bunch florist on City Walk (Allara Street) in the city.
I’ve been following their progress on the Shop Handmade blog. As far as I know, this is something quite unique for Canberra. When I was in Melbourne, there was a little shop opening in Fitzroy where local designers, artists and crafters could rent a “cube” (shelf space) to have their wares sold in the store. It seems like a great way for small start-up art/craft businesses or designers to get their work out there in front of people, and hopefully will influence the shopping culture in Canberra even if just in a small way – unique designs for discerning shoppers, rather than the mass-produced objects in the mall. I’m looking forward to checking out some fabulous dresses, jewellery, hats, and letterpressed cards.
