Canberra toddlers saving the planet for Earth Day
Posted on April 9, 2010 by by emd
Playdates for the Planet is a Canberra playgroup with an eco-friendly focus. We’re planning a fun, free event for toddlers and pre-schoolers on Earth Day, Thursday 22 April 2010. Details here.
The idea is to get the kids to think about what happens to their toys when they’ve finished with them. Can they be played with by younger children? Can things we don’t need anymore be turned into new and useful objects?
From 10am til 12pm at Brindabella Baby’s new location at Rodney’s Nursery, 24 Beltana Rd, Pialligo
There will be recycled craft and a toy swap for the kids, get yourself a coffee or drink from the cafe, relax in the gorgeous surroundings of the nursery, and have a chat with like minded people, about ways we can protect the Earth and celebrate this planet we live on. We might do eco-storytime if the kids can drag themselves off the play equipment in Rodney’s Garden! Come along, bring your friends, enter the Lucky Door Prize and receive an eco-goodies sample bag too.
Most Creative Creation Competition
Using recycled bits & bobs, kids can make their own Recycled Craft Creation. All necessary items will be supplied, but feel free to bring along a bag or two of clean egg cartons, small boxes etc., that you’ve saved. There will be a lovely prize for each category: Under Two, Two to Three, Three to Five years.
Preloved Toy Swap
Bring a pre-loved toy in good condition and swap it! No stuffed toys, no broken toys, no batteries or electrical power required. Place them in one of two big tubs as you arrive at the event – one for Under 3 Years, the other for Over 3 Years. Please note, taking a toy in the swap is at your own risk – we won’t be checking toys for suitability or functionality. Kids can take a toy as they leave at the end of the event (not during). Kids can suddenly decide they’re not really ready to give up their toys if they see someone else enjoying it!
What is Earth Day?
“Earth Day is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment held on April 22. It was founded in the USA, as an environmental teach in, in 1970, and is celebrated in many countries every year. The first Earth Day was in 1970.” Wikipedia
