“ACT Minister for Children and Young People Joy Burch presented Anthony Antioch with the award, as well as the Personal Achievement Award, at a gala dinner at Rydges Lakeside. Four other impressive young persons and the Hall Volunteer Fire Brigade Juniors were also recognised in other categories.”
The Young Canberra Citizen of the Year Awards recognises young people who have made a noteworthy contribution to the ACT community.
Ms Burch said the former Radford College student was to be commended for his substantial community service and for excelling at school despite some health challenges along the way. Last year he was elected the youngest-ever president of the United Nations Youth Association ACT, and he is currently studying International Relations, Arabic and Law at the ANU.
“Mr Antioch has demonstrated extraordinary dedication and contribution to the ACT community, putting into practice his fine understanding of those who need assistance,” Ms Burch said.
“He is a member of the Australian Red Cross Youth Advisory Council, the United Nations Youth Association, and has done volunteer work with the Australian Red Cross Roadhouse program and Save a Mate – all while continuing his studies.”
The awards ceremony also honoured Michael Freeman (Individual Community); James Batchelor (Youth Arts); James Hunt (Young Entrepreneur) and Charlotte Wood (Young Environmentalist). The Group Award was received by Hall Volunteer Fire Brigade Juniors.
