Canberra to Celebrate and Promote Latino Culture
Posted on February 12, 2010 by valeri
The ACT Government has announced a new agreement that will support cultural links between Canberra and the Latin American culture.
“An agreement between the ACT government and the ambassadors of nine Latin American countries will be signed today by the Chief Minister Jon Stanhope and Heads of Missions of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.”
The Agreement also celebrates the establishment of the Latin American Plaza in Canberra’s City West.
The agreement will promote Latin American Plaza as a place that:
- celebrates the many traditions of multiculturalism in Australia and to which countries of Latin America have actively contributed;
- registers the commitment of Latin Americans and Australians to common social, political, artistic and spiritual values that have established “bridges of understanding”;
- expresses ancient geographic connections and more recent cultural and economic ties that bind Australia with the countries of Latin America; and
- recognises the rich historic links between Australia and the countries of Latin America.
“Formalising this Agreement will begin new chapters where the representatives of the nine missions, supported by their national governments and Canberrans of Latin American heritage, contribute to enlivening this plaza through art and cultural expression,” Mr Stanhope said.
“Latin American Plaza will become a focus for bicentenary events, and that “all of Canberra can share in those national celebrations”. Mr Stanhope said.
