The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is again warning people of the latest Taxation Office e-mail scams being circulated that claims to offer a refund from the Tax Office.
The ATO will send you emails or SMS promoting new services or alerting you to due dates, however, they will never send you an email requesting you to confirm, update or disclose confidential details like your name, date of birth, address, passwords, credit card details etc but if need to know this information, they will mail you a letter to your postal address.”
The following page is  constantly updated with examples of the latest Tax Office related scams.
Latest Scam – ‘Recalculation of your tax refund’
TweetThis latest scam has a bogus Tax Office form attached to it, which asks for personal details including credit card details and ATM card PIN numbers. The email asks for the form to be completed, printed, and sent in to a genuine Tax Office address.
The email states that ‘after a recalculation of your fiscal activity, we have determined that you are entitled to receive a tax refund of AU$ xxx’
When the victim fills out the form and clicks the ‘print’ button, all of the personal details are instantly sent to a third party overseas.
After submitting personal details, victims are redirected back to the genuine Tax Office website.
These scams are predominantly designed to conduct identity theft and or credit card fraud.
