A massive 8.8 earthquake hit Chile at 3:24 am this morning, the following content is from a Latin American source.
From infobae.com – Google translator
“A 8.8 magnitude earthquake shook Chile in the early hours of Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey. Six people are confirmed dead, houses collapsed and power and telephone lines are down.”
The Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, called on the population to remain calm and said that so far there are six confirmed fatalities.
“I can only confirm that there are five deaths in the Maule Region and one in the AraucanÃa region,” Bachelet said talking to journalists.
“No doubt with an earthquake of this nature, this size of this magnitude, we can not exclude that there may be other deaths and probably injured,” added the president, who called an emergency meeting.
Due to the drop in supply of electricity in large parts of Chile, police and firefighters took to walk the streets in cities across the country with patrols and sirens to verify the extent of the damage and assist victims.
