The Barnes and Noble Nook Reader Still Not Available, Will Only Ship on February 12th
Posted on January 24, 2010 by by benrichter
Demand for the Barnes and Noble Nook has taken the company by surprise. It seems that many within Barnes and Noble did not expect the pre-orders to hit as high in numbers as they did. The device was unofficially announced back in summer 2009. The official release hit the market on October 30, 2009. Multiple customers received emails regarding the Nook Reader and its upcoming pre-sale date. Fliers hit the stores to encourage customers that were not signed up for emails to take a look at the device.
Barnes and Noble decided that they needed to join the ranks in eReaders like Amazon with their Kindle. Despite many differences with the devices, and the usability of the Kindle, the Barnes and Noble Nook has received a great deal of interest. It helps that the Barnes and Noble reader is $259 just as the Kindle. It comes with Wi-Fi, AT&T 3G, and a six inch E Ink display.
The first ship date for the eReader was set for November 30, 2009. After the announcement of the device, and higher than expected pre- orders Barnes and Noble had to rethink things. They decided that different shipping dates would have to be offered since production did not account for the numerous orders they actually received.
While stores received their displays in December, many customers who pre-ordered were put on a waiting list. The first shipment was made on November 30, 2009, but it went by when you made the pre-order. For those who waited a little too long they were put on hold.
A second shipment was made on December 7, with a third following on December 18th. Some of these lucky individuals purchasing the Nook Reader did manage to get their Christmas presents. The latest news from Barnes and Noble is that all other shipments will be pushed back further. At first the next shipment was supposed to ship January 4th. This got pushed back to the 11th, then the 15th, and an announcement was made that shipments would go out on February 1st.
With the month of January drawing to a close there has been yet another announcement from Barnes and Noble regarding their Nooks. This time the announcement stated all pre- orders are now going to be shipped on February 12th. We will certainly have to wait and see if the Nook Reader will indeed make it to these other customers who have been waiting for more than a month. Many who have had to wait for their Nooks were sent an email on December 18th, 2009. The email offered a $100 gift certificate as an apology for the back log in orders.

Ordered a nook knowing full well that the expected ship date on the site said 2/12, but when I got the order confirmation it said expected ship date would be 2/1. Fast forward and I received notice that my order had shipped on 1/19 and I had it in hand by thew 21st. Pleasant surprise.

I preordered my Nook Dec. 18th and Barnes and Noble shipped it on Jan. 21st. So I should have my e-reader by Jan. 25th or 26th, according to the UPS tracking page.
So it seems some customers will receive their Nooks by the Feb. 1st expected ship date.

Since the new year, shipments of nooks have been going out on time, with a few exceptions. The reason for the continually pushed back dates this month and next is that B&N is still taking pre-orders.
It’s not, as you have suggested, that the same orders from October and November have been pushed back over and over.
The people whose ship-dates are February 12th have not been waiting for more than a month. They’ve been waiting a couple of weeks.

Why wait for Nook, when you have other (if not better) alternatives out there like the Kindle?
