Sony Now Has More than 5 eReader Models- Isn’t it Better to Have Just One?
Posted on January 19, 2010 by by benrichter
Sony has come out with 5 versions of the eReader for the public. At least two of their eReaders are no longer available, but that will still leave three versions for people to choose from. One has to ask why Sony feels it is necessary to have five versions of Sony reader. Is it better to have several versions or just one? To answer this question a look at the five versions is essential.
Reader Pocket Edition PRS-300 is usually called the Pocket Edition. It has the same touch screen as the PRS-600 model being discussed later. It is an entry level device, which is priced below the competition at $199.99. The screen is smaller and there is no touch interface, expandable memory, or MP3 audio.Â
The Reader Touch Edition PRS-600 is called the Touch Edition. It was the replacement for the PRS- 700 model. It does not have a front light feature, but it offers three colors and a comparable size to the Kindle and other Sony eReaders. It offers expandable memory and 512 MB of internal memory. The Touch Edition is $299.99.Â
Reader Daily Edition is going to be known as the Daily Edition. The PRS-900 is the latest option from Sony for electronic readers. It has a 7 inch display screen with 16 levels of grayscale, touch screen and 3G Wireless. It is similar to the Kindle in that it offers computer free downloads unlike the other Sony models. The Daily Edition is $399.00. This price is lower than the Kindle US package, but the Kindle Global edition is still the least costly at $259.00.
The discontinued models are the PRS-500 and PRS-700. The PRS-500 has a six inch display with E Ink and 13mm thickness. Memory is only 64MB with a memory stick expandable slot. It has a 7500 page turns charge for the battery and PC interface. The model can still be found used, but that price depends on the seller.
The PRS-700 is no longer available for purchase unless used. It has a touch screen with a virtual keyboard like the Nook. The display is 6 inches with LED lighting in the background.Â
The two discontinued models show you one of the reasons Sony has 5 eReader models. The PRS- 500 and PRS- 700 have been updated in two of the versions that are being sold at Sony right now. The updates in technology make the Sony eReader more desirable for customers because they know the bugs have been fixed. It also gives the consumer a choice between models. The consumer will find either a touch screen or iPod style pad to use. Customers may find one easier to use than the other, thus having various models is better than one.

Isn’t it better to have a choice? the pocket is small easy to use and holds 350 books, The touch has an easy to use interface where you can swipe the screen to turn as well as add annotations and highlight text, While the Daily allows you 3 G access to the e book store as well as subscriptions to newspapers delivered daily. Also its 5 versions are the result of Sony having this for 5 generations. One other thing for consumers they can see these models at local stores and be able to try them before they purchase rather than just order online from the competitor with only a picture to judge. I for one am a fan of choice.
