Today is Australia Day and the search engine giant “Google” is celebrating it with a new doodle, this new doodle is the winner of the latest Google doodle competition called “Doodle for Google“.

In this competition, Google asked young people from across Australia to design their own doodle. This year’s theme was ‘My wish for Australia’.

The public were then asked to vote for their favourite doodle, and the overall winner was going to be shown in the Google Australia homepage on Australia Day in 2010.

This year’s winner is Jessie Du from New South Wales.

I love what Google did – the competition is a great idea.

But what happened to the Aboriginal Flag behind the yellow sun? This was on the original design, but by the time it came to publishing it on the google homepage, it’s been removed.

I’m astonished and appalled by this.

  4. [...] Attentive Google visitors soon noticed that something was missing. Jessie’s original entry included the Aboriginal flag but this has been removed from the image on Google’s homepage. But before readers start throwing around the ‘R’ word, here’s Google’s explanation: [...]

I wonder if they didn’t have approval for it? I believe if you want to use the aboriginal flag for ads or public events you need approval, I think?

The Aboriginal flag was removed because of copyright reasons. Harold Thomas didn’t allow Google to upload my logo with the Aboriginal flag, as he is the owner and designer of the it. So, they had someone to digitally remove the flag, leave the ‘sun’ and add more ‘sky and stars’. I was really disappointed when we got an email telling us this, but yeah, it’s not like I can do anything about it. :l
