Floods and mudslides in Peru

Posted on January 29, 2010 by by Valeri

Most media and I am talking about social and traditional media are completely ignoring and not covering the floods and mudslides happening in the departments of Cusco and Apurimac in Peru.

I following information comes from “Periodico humanitario“, which is a spanish blog. I used google to translate the following information:

Torrential rains in the departments of Cusco and Apurimac have left more than 1,300 victims (lost everything) and more of 12,100 affected (lost some of their belongings). In Cusco there are over 250 homes destroyed, 18 thousand meters of damaged roads, two bridges collapsed and 22 meters of potable water networks affected. 7 people have also died so far.

The districts affected are: Poroy, San Jeronimo, Saylla, Santiago, in the province of Cusco Capacmarca in the province of Chumbivilcas; Ancashuasi, Limatambo, and Izcuchaca Zurite in the province of Anta, San Salvador, Pisac, Coya and Lamay in the province of Calca. Andahuaylillas districts, Lucre and Urcos city in the province of Quispicanchi; Ollantaytambo in the Urubamba province and Paruro city in the province of Paruro city.

Much of the capital of the province of Anta desembalse flooded by Hatun Mayu River, more than 300 families were affected, most of them lost their homes and were evacuated to schools. The floods in the pampas of anta Occoruro affected communities, Haparquilla, MarkJ and other Zurite district.

No one can come in or out of the city of Quillabamba, something similar happened in Machupicchu, where thousands of tourists were evacuated by helicopters. Some hikers suffered an avalanche on the Inca Trail, where 2 died. The most affected area is called the south valley, especially the people in the district Huacarpay Lucre, which was completely flooded by Huacarpay Lucre lake and more than 400 families took refuge in the neighboring hills. The village of Oropesa was also flooded in the district of Oropesa, by an overflowing river Huatanay.

In Apurimac the provinces of Abancay, Andahuaylas, Aymaraes, Cotabambas and Chincheros were also affected. The rains also affected the Puno region, particularly the Provinces of Melgar, Azángaro and Putin. Also in the Acobamba in Huancavelica province, where deaths were reported.

Also over night a landslide struck the village of Zurite, Peru.com

Google translator:

the landslide of mud and stones covered the Plaza de Armas, the town’s Church, the main streets of the city and damaged 500 houses.

The incident occurred about 3 pm on Thursday after they noticed a crack on a hill and began to take appropriate action, emergency services were able to evacuate the entire population.

this hasn’t been given enough space in the press. Thousands of people are stranded. All they have focused on are the tourists. There are people in distress in places other than Haiti, the news needs to be covered in those places as well!
