Canberra baby shop beats the stocktake sale crowds with Facebook

Posted on January 25, 2010 by by emd

If you went to the Boxing Day clearance sales this year, you probably noticed that the crowds who arrived early got the best of the bargains. When you’re shopping with kids (or a pregnant belly!), or you have to work during the day, it’s a bit hard to line up for the door-buster stocktake sales.

Another problem with the usual January clearance sales is that the focus is on moving Christmas and summer stock – cards and decorations, summer clothing, toys etc. Most baby shops don’t have a big January sale, because they haven’t had to stock up on car seats or nappies for a Christmas gift-buying rush. Which means that if you’re looking for a bargain on baby basics, it’s hard to find at this time of year.

Canberr’s eco-friendly and fair trade baby shop, Brindabella Baby, has found an innovative way to beat the stocktake sale crowds, and make their unique product range available to bargain shoppers everywhere. Brindabella Baby will hold a Facebook Garage Sale, with most stock at cost price or less!

Pictures and descriptions of items, with a bargain basement price, will be posted on the Brindabella Baby Facebook page from 8pm Eastern daylight savings time on Wednesday, 27 January 2010. All you have to do is post in the comments if you want the item. On Thursday morning, Paypal invoices will be emailed out, with postage costs based on how much can be stuffed into pre-paid Express Post satchels.

There will be hundreds of items, with entire product ranges being discontinued – clothes, accessories, gourmet treats, carriers, nappies and more. And the first to comment gets the item, so make sure you don’t miss out! Become a Facebook fan today, and get ready for never-to-be-repeated bargains!

I’m all for promotion of local businesses… but you really should declare your personal interests when writing an advertorial for your own business!

In reply to Jonathon, who knows very well what I am involved with (business and volunteer work):

Take a look at most community news websites, and you’ll see that many local news stories are posted by authors with a personal interest in the issue. Being involved is what drives people to take action. Having studied the ethics of the fourth estate at university is unlikely for the majority of bloggers or forum participants.

If you follow the “about” or “profile” links on most community news websites, blogs, forums etc it should tell you if they are involved in the business. My own profile here shows this information. What I posted here is simply the text of a media release sent to lots of blogs and websites.

I have no problem with your business and volunteer interests.

However there is a strong differentiation between being involved in a (community/public) cause and promoting it for its general benefit and promoting a cause specifically for your personal and financial gain.

I take issue with the fact that the majority of readers would not know that you are a proprietor of the aforementioned business (and it is a tenuous connection to establish that fact even from your profile page on this site).

Thus by not declaring your interests, nor clearly indicating that the article is a (republication of a) “media release”, I believe that such conduct was highly unethical in nature, bordering on shill and unconscionable business conduct.

I still maintain that a byline clearly declaring your interest/affiliation would have been the most appropriate solution and would not have in any way detracted from the content of the article.

Perhaps next time you may even consider supporting the sites you use by buying some paid advertising space when you want to drum up some extra revenue for yourself.

Jonathon, when Typeboard launched I was invited to post articles about my business events. If you think Typeboard’s rules should be changed, why don’t you write to them suggesting new rules? I’m sure they would be happy to put some rules in place if you suggest a workable alternative. Feel free to email or phone me if you wish to discuss further. I know you have my contact details.

By the way, my business runs for the purpose of supporting fair trade programs in developing countries and local handmade crafters, and providing access to information and products for parents wanting to raise their children as eco-friendly as possible. The shop provides space for community groups to meet, sponsors events, and is used as a resource hub. It’s not a high-profit multi-national.
