ACT Gov launches Newborn Webcam System

Posted on January 11, 2010 by by valerirojas

The ACT Government has launched a new webcam online system which will provide new parents who are unable to visit their sick babies daily due to other commitments or if they lived long distances with the opportunity to monitor and watch their babies online.

Canberra Hospital’s Centre for Newborn Care (CNC) is the first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Australia to implement such a system.

“The new webcam service will overcome the tyranny of distance for new parents who cannot regularly visit their babies in Canberra Hospital’s Centre for Newborn Care.” ACT Minister for Health, Katy Gallagher MLA, said today.

“To support the bonding process staff can demonstrate to parents via the webcam how to care for the baby, how to change and feed it and how to administer medication if necessary.”

The way it works is by having a webcam above the baby’s cot in the CNC so that families can see their baby on their home computer via the internet. Parents can view their own baby daily from 7- 9am and from 5- 7pm by using a secure password, relatives can also access the system by having a secure password.

Parents can also visit the CNC website to find general information on the services provided.

“There is potential for further enhancement of this service at the future Women’s and Children’s Hospital to include audio facilities, interactive communication between CNC staff and parents, and the creation of personal baby diaries.”

It won’t be as good as actually being there, but this might also help extended family who can’t visit the sensitive NICU environment. They usually only let parents into NICU to visit babies.

Perhaps this should have been in place months ago. This could have been an effective workaround that might have avoided the exposure to Tuberculosis that occurred.
