New Emergency Website launched in Australia – be warned be informed

Posted on December 3, 2009 by by valerirojas

“A new website has been launched this afternoon to provide information to the community about the new national telephone warning system which was launched yesterday – EMERGENCY ALERTESA reports

The Emergency Alert System is a telephone warning system that  emergency services can use to send alerts to communities via landline telephones based on the location of the handset, and to mobile phones, based on the billing address.

The website also provide visitors with links to emergency services websites by State.

Another important aspect of the website is that it was build on an open source content management system called “Joomla“, it probably doesn’t mean a lot to many people but you can actually build online communities with it, and so I wonder if the emergency website will try to do exactly that? It would be kind of handy during emergency situations similar to how Twitter was used during the L.A fires a few years ago.

Joomla is an awesome tool for deploying websites fast. It is flexible and relatively user friendly. A good choice of tool in terms of open source power. My only criticism of the site is it could be better with a proper version of language management rather than the PDFs for download. Joomla has some awesome multi-lingual tools that would have taken it to the next level. Great site, good work.

I agree with you metaganda, Joomla does have some awesome multi-lingual tools.
I guess the good thing about it is that they can always add new features and plugins if they need to.

    Yup, agreed.

Joomla multi-lingual tools worth considering are:

JoomFish! http://www.joomfish.net/ or the newcomer Nooku http://www.nooku.org
Both are very strong with Nooku probably the better option for high volume sites, as it uses less queries.

  5. I agree, Joomla has some amazing community and multilingual features. Open source CMS systems like Joomla and Drupal are the future of the web.
