Leaked Nexus One info – Google calls it Nexus One and Not Google Phone

Posted on December 30, 2009 by by valerirojas

The guys from GizModo have received some inside information on the new Nexus One phone, also known as the Google Phone. Report

The leaked information confirms a few things about the Nexus One phone such as:

  • Google will sell it unlocked and unsubsidized for US $530
  • Google will also sell it by themselves.
  • Google will sell it at google.com/phone
  • Google will still call it the Nexus One apparently, and not the Google Phone
  • “One weirdness in the Terms of Sale that we quickly glanced through was that Google made sure you acknowledged that the manufacturer is HTC, and not Google.”

So Google will sell the phone but it is called the Nexus One, manufactured by HTC using Google Android as the Operating System.

So I guess my post a few weeks ago “There is no Google Phone – Twitter confirms it” was correct, but most blogs and media are still calling it the Google Phone, am I missing something here or should we call the HTC Hero, HTC Tatoo the Google Phone as well?

What concerns me is there still is no perfect “smart phone” solution.

Apple with the iPhone offer a closed eco-system where you are locked in their “world” with the limitations they impose such as as the inability to run Adobe Flash (a de-facto net standard present and required to view many web pages) and any applications for the iPhone are stringently vetted for suitability by Apple (meaning that some useful applications never make it to market).

However it appears that the Android based phone world may follow the previous pitfalls that beset the Windows Pocket PC / Windows Mobile arena where there was often a distinct lack of an upgrade path to later versions of the OS software.

This was most recently highlighted in an article from the Register that discusses a Samsung phone that was only released in September 2009 yet is “Stuck” with an older version of Android: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/12/30/galaxy_android_2/

To put this all in to perspective I run a three and half year old desktop Macintosh system that has been upgraded through three major OS revisions – Tiger -> Leopard -> Snow Leopard and whilst the hardware is now “old” it is likely that it will still be supported in to the next Apple OS/X revision. Similarly my five year old Comaq Windows desktop machine that came originally with Windows XP is still able to be upgraded to Vista and Windows 7 on the same hardware platform (albeit with increasingly limited functionality).

I agree with you Jonathon, in my personal opinion the Iphone is limited as to what apps you can use “Apple Only”, that is not very flexible, but they have done a great marketing campaign and many people love it.

I have heard the HTC Hero and newer models will have the option for upgrade to the Android 2.0 and future versions. Let’s hope that happens.
