Google shares their view on Australia’s Mandatory ISP Filtering

Posted on December 16, 2009 by by Valeri

The most popular search engine in the world “Google”, has posted a statement on their Australian Blog site regarding the new Australian Government ISP Filtering system. “Our primary concern is that the scope of content to be filtered is too wide” Google said.

While we recognise that protecting the free exchange of ideas and information cannot be without some limits, we believe that more information generally means more choice, more freedom and ultimately more power for the individual.

Google argues that the type of filtering the Australian Government wants to implement will not only block child sexual abuse material but also socially and politically controversial material. “For example: Educational content on safer drug use — as well as the grey realms of material instructing in any crime, including politically controversial crimes such as euthanasia.” Google says and many people agree that this type of content may be unpleasant and unpalatable but the government should not have the right to block information which can inform debate of controversial issues.

“Some limits, like child pornography, are obvious. No Australian wants that to be available – and we agree.” Google said.
