New Canberra Bus Service “REDEX” – free travel for the first week

The ACT Government’s trial of a new high frequency bus service between the Gungahlin Market Place and Canberra Railway Station in Kingston will start on Monday 16 November offering buses every 15 minutes from 7am and 7pm. ACTION REDEX

Buses will run every 15 minutes from 7am to 7pm between the Gungahlin Market Place and Canberra Railway Station in Kingston, via Mitchell, Northbourne Avenue, the City, Russell and Barton.

“REDEX will be trialled until 30 June 2010, including the school holidays, but not the Christmas and New Year period. ”

FREE TRAVEL: As part of the new Bus System, ACTIONis offering free travel for the first week on the REDEX between 9:00am and 4:30pm. Offer ends on Friday 20 November at 4:30pm. So if you are planning on getting late to work next week then catch Redex.

    If you want to entice people to use the new REDEX service surely you would attempt to try an attract the sort of people who currently are not using public transport taking their car instead.

    Instead the they have chosen to completely ignore the potential peak period commuters between 7-9am and 4:40-6pm.

    Sure, the people who regularly use buses would have got a “free ride” for a week (in the scheme of things does that really mater?), instead they have shown gross incompetence in failing to market the service properly to attract the bulk of new potential customers.

    Damien Haas (a fellow Light Rail advocate) wrote an interesting blog article in October outlining the problems he foresaw with the REDEX solution and why it was likely to fail.

    It seems if the management of ACTION can’t get their basic marketing right then there is probably little hope for the long run.
