Australia’s National Multicultural Festival “Latin Carnival” under threat
Posted on November 23, 2009 by by scoop
The organisers of Canberra’s popular Carnival in the City program are threatening to walk away from the event because of massive funding cut. ABC Canberra
ABC reports that the Latin American music and culture program during the National Multicultural Festival in Canberra has had it’s $20,000 budget cut down to $5,000 by the ACT government.
Current Carnival producer Frank Madrid says the event is in doubt because there is no money to pay for international artists.
So is the ACT government trying to remove all major programs from the National Multicultural Festival? first was the Fringe Festival, now is the Latin Carnival in the City.
So what event will be next? the International Food Festival?
Either way, decisions like this one will keep visitors away from the Capital of Australia.

Let’s hope that this doesn’t happen – the latin carnival is by far the biggest (music) night of the multicultural festival (food festival excluded) and gets huge crowds into the city making it seem like Canberra almost even has some sort of bustling night-life comparable to great cities around the world. Let’s not lose this event due to cost-cutting by our obtuse, culturally inept politicians

I also thought the latin carnival was one of the biggest events of the festival…

It is one of the biggest events of the festival. It’s the only time when Canberra is alive.
They did make a big mistake last year I must admit, poor event management. There are so many talented Latin dance groups and bands in Canberra that personally I do not feel that there is a need to bring artist from outside Australia, maybe one would be enough, there also is a lot of great ones outside of Canberra ad with great management and appropriate funding the event could still go on. I am sure most of the artists from Canberra would do it voluntarily if they were asked to, that is how it used to be done. Last year was just disappointingly managed.

[...] The ACT Government has dismissed claims funding for the ‘Carnival in the City’ event, at next year’s National Multicultural Festival, would be slashed by 75 per cent. This comes a day after the ABC reported that the Latin Carnival Festival funding was cut down to $5000. I also mentioned it here [...]
