ACT government expanding 40km/h limits – have your say

Posted on November 24, 2009 by by facts

The ACT Government is urging Canberrans to have their say on whether speed limits around busy retail and commercial precincts should be reduced to 40km/h limit to improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.

“Canberrans have until Friday 18 December 2009 to provide the government with feedback on whether the 40 km/h speed limit, which currently applies in school zones, should be expanded to other areas of the ACT such as shopping centres and community facilities.” Media release

The Government still needs to decide where the reduced speed limit could apply in the ACT.

“Further consultation will be undertaken with locals and traders if the proposal is supported by the community.”

Canberrans can provide feedback by completing a questionnaire available online at http://www.tams.act.gov.au/, or in hard copy at Canberra Connect shopfronts and public libraries.

An independent report by ARRB Group, which includes draft guidelines on how reduced speed limits could apply in the ACT, is available from http://www.tams.act.gov.au/.

I strongly feel that ones again motor vehicle drivers are the ones who are having to suffer. All our roads are getting narrower to make more room for cyclist who do not have to pay any government charges to use our roads; maybe cyclist should start paying registration and pedestrians an annual fee to walk on our roads.

To have a vehicle registered for 3 months its only $66.60 but then you have to pay a CTPI premium Fee of $116.80, then Road Rescue Fee of $4.00, then road safety contribution of $0.50 then a registration surcharge of $25.00 including GST $10.62
Totals to $212.90 for using your vehicle for 3 months oh and that depends on the type of vehicle you drive, these applies to a station wagon. You then have insurance to pay plus maintaining you vehicle whish is not cheap. Now all these include GST and Taxes which goes to the government. So why do we have to pay so much to use our roads when we are already paying enough through tax. Why can’t we just pay for registration, mechanical work and our own insurance??????????????????

      totally agree with you CW…

we pay to use the roads, and for emergency attendance etc…more than fair that people who ride on the roads and are part of the reasons our roads are narrower should have to share some of the cost, even if it is a very minor one..

carparks in retail areas already have slower speeds, why should the ROAD have a slower speed around retail areas? pedestrians shouldnt be on the damn road in the first place!!!….they have the footpath for that. If they want to cross the road, use one of the many pedestrian crossings around the city.
