The Emperor’s new Clothes revisited

Well, the media onslaught for Windows 7 has commenced.
Article in today’s Australian IT section extolling the virtues of W7 over Vista et al.
I have been testing the “new” Windows for about 12 months now and my impressions are quite positive. I did note as the product became more “feature rich” (AKA Bloated) that the “speed” of W7 took a corresponding impact.
It is interesting to note, that a number of respected pro’s in the IT world (and Windows in particular) – and I will just cite the person I consider one of the smartest and most open in his comments, Mark Minasi (www.minasi.com), former co-founder and co- owner of Sysinternals/Wininternals and now a Microsft Fellow (sort V. senior Guru) who has said quite emphatically that W7 is no faster than Vista… and I agree. (and no, it does not mean I think I am as smart as Mr Minasi – in fact I think he has more knowledge of Winows in his small finger than the totality of my knowledge…)
That said, some of the enhancements, (AKA bug fixes) have meant that better/more efficient use is made of hardware resources. A good example is my testing of a pre-release version of W7 “starter edition” on an Intel Atom cpu based “NetTop” (think NetBook except on the desktop).
It performed no worse than XP home – albeit with better (new) hardware support and features etc.
Of course the issue here for me is; why are we being coersed into buying the “fixed” version of Vista at the FULLÂ price of a new Operating System.
Vista, for all its bad press (much of it copycat journalism and of dubious veracity) was a complete redesign from the ground up – partly in response to new hardware demands and partly in response to the onslaught of the ever worsening Malware situation.
(and no, it is not because Windows is “BAD” – it is because it has 90% of the desktop deployment… if Linux or Apple had that market share, we would al be saying the same things currently said about Windows security about them.)
My point to all this rambling is Vista is Windows ME (does anyone remeber that disaster – shoved out the door as a cash cow because XP was late – I fixed numerous PC’s that owners were convinced had “died”, by installing XP.) all over again.
Vista was released too soon (7 years and no new OS measn lots of lost revenue) and W7 is the “fix”
As it has no “new” and startling features – why are we being forced to pay all over again for Vista re-written.
W7 is Vista Service Pack 2 (just as XP was not stable and reliable unlike SP 2 was released) and as far as I am concerned, it is a complete ripoff.

Typical MS, so what should I do now? wait a few months before W7 is out and see what people think of it?

That’s interesting, I just can’t believe Microsoft can get away with it though.
