“Gambling Help Online” is a new website service that provides Australians with gambling problems the option of getting counselling and information online should they be unable or reluctant to do so face-to-face. However some of the self-assessment tools can be used by anyone.
“Gambling Help Online” is an initiative of the Ministerial Council on Gambling and is funded as part of an agreement between all State and Territory governments and the Australian Government.
The website however will be operated by Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre. Turning Point employs staff from a range of professional backgrounds and collaborates with organisations across the research, health, education and community services sectors.
Gambling Help Online is the first of its type to provide:
- 24 hour/7 day free and confidential live chat. email counselling and support services;
- Professional counsellors with expertise in problem gambling and online services;
- The option to seek assistance anonymously, or to register with the service to keep a record of online discussions;
- Integration with State based 24/7 telephone services and face-to-face counselling operated by the Break Even Network, and
- Extensive website content, information and web links for additional self-help and information.
The website also provides you with other services and tools such as the gambling calculator where you can answer a set of questions and it will tell you how much money you spend on gambling. It also has a  self-assessment page known as the Canadian Problem Gambling Index. It is a tool based on research on the common signs and consequences of problematic gambling.

Does anyone find it more than slightly ironic that the ACT Labor party receives significant contributions from clubs, especially their own and these contributions are most certainly drawn from the proceeds of gambling revenue.
It just doesn't seem right that they directly benefited from the proceeds of gambling then use "tax payers" money to help resolve the gambling problem that they directly contributed to in the first place. Hypocrisy?
The ACT ALP received $558,128.00 from the Canberra Labor Club as disclosed in their 2007/2008 Annual Electoral Return: http://www.elections.act.gov.au/parties/fadreturn...
We still haven't seen the return for the equivalent period over the 2008 election yet and I would suggest that the Canberra Labor Club (and perhaps other aligned clubs) made significant contributions.
