Fugitive caught thanks to Facebook

Posted on October 16, 2009 by by valerirojas

If you are going to steal more than US$200,000 and move to another country to live a hardcore party life, remember to use a nickname/pseudonym when you want to tell every body about you online.

26 year old Maxi Sopo, a native of Cameroon was a fugitive from the US justice after allegedly stealing more than $200,000 from Seattle-area banks and credit unions.

Sopo, was having so much fun that decided to make friends on Facebook and tell everybody about his good life. However one of his many ‘friend requests’ went to a man he had met while out drinking in a Cancun nightclub.

What Sopo didn’t know, was that the man “Facebook friend” was a former US Justice Department official.

Sopo was caught  in a Mexico City jail. He is awaiting extradition to the US and could face up to 30 years in jail. Timesonline UK
