Police targets cyclists in Melbourne

Posted on August 31, 2009 by by valerirojas

Victoria Police will start a three day bike operation tomorrow “Tuesday 1st September” after statistics reveal there has been a ten per cent rise in the number of cyclists taken to hospital in the Melbourne CBD.

Statistics for bicycle collisions this year also shows the main factor to each of these collisions was that the cyclists had not been seen or heard coming.

“Warnings will be given out tomorrow to anyone caught doing the wrong thing, while one-the-spot fines will be issued on Wednesday and Thursday.”

Cyclists should notice: the fine for riding through a red light is $234. Failure to wear a helmet, fail to use a dedicated bike lane, or not having a light or other equipment each carry a $58 on-the-spot fine.

Sergeant Lay also said pedestrians caught walking or crossing bike lanes inappropriately will be fined $58 and motorists caught driving in bike lanes may receive an $88 fine.
