A new bill will be introduced today to give Police extra power to combat organised crime in the ACT. Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Simon Corbell said. Media release
The Crimes (Assumed Identities) Bill will give ACT police the ability to create and adopt a new and false identity for the purposes of gathering intelligence and arresting organised criminals.
“The ACT Government is very committed to disrupting organised crime rings within the ACT, and this is the latest of several new police powers that will make it easier to collect evidence and make arrests,” Mr Corbell said.
“The Government’s Bill will also strengthen police work across borders. The Bill will enable participating States and Territories to use assumed identities in each other’s jurisdictions.
“Cross jurisdictional co-operation will play a major role in the ability of ACT forces to combat criminal behaviour. We know criminal behaviour spills across borders, and the location of the ACT means often operations need to be co-ordinated with the assistance of New South Wales Police.”
“If passed this legislation will be a valuable addition to police powers, but will only be available to officers who have been authorised by officers in positions of the highest command.”
