No more Melbourne Cup Holidays for Canberrans

Posted on August 31, 2009 by by Captcha

The ACT Government has announced that Canberrans will no longer have a public holiday on Melbourne Cup Day, which the Canberra Government nicely called it Family and Community Day Public Holiday.

“ACT Government held an extensive six week consultation with the community and businesses over the future of the Family and Community Day as a public holiday. Over 1,000 submissions were received concerning the future of this public holiday.”

The results showed Canberrans supported the idea of having a Family and Community Day as a public holiday, though not on the date that it had been set in the past years.

So the next Family and Community Day holiday for 2010 will be held on the first Monday of the September/October school holidays. This will see the Family and Community Day held on Monday, 27 September 2010.

“However, in future years where the first Monday of the school holidays falls on the currently designated Labour Day public holiday, such as will occur in 2011 and 2012, the Family and Community Day will be moved to the second Monday of the term break,” said the Minister. ”

So this means, Canberrans will celebrate the Family and Community Day 2009 public holiday for the last time on Melbourne Cup Day.

For the next four years the Family and Community Day public holiday will fall on the following dates:
2009
Tuesday, 3 November 2009

2010
Monday, 27 September 2010

2011
Monday, 10 October 2011

2012
Monday, 8 October 2012

good news, I didn’t understand why it was called family and community day when the real purpose of it was to watch a silly race anyway….
