Staff members have had to ask men masturbating while watching computer pornography in Sunshine Coast libraries to leave, it has been revealed.

A Sunshine Coast council spokesman said staff at more than one council library had to take action after seeing the men performing sex acts at public computer workstations.

The bombshell came as a petition with 3222 signatures was presented to the council on Wednesday.

The petition called for internet filtering software to be installed on council computers.

Petitioner Paul Sheldon began his campaign just over a month ago, owing to concerns children were being exposed to hard core pornography on library computers.

Dr Sheldon said his wife had seen an elderly man accessing a porn site in a library.
