Did you know that one in six Australians suffer from some form of hearing loss?

You wonder how I know that? well find out more at the Hearing Awareness Week website.

Hearing Awareness Week is an annual event held in the last week of August. Sunday 23 – Saturday 29 of August 2009.

It provides an opportunity to raise community awareness of hearing impairment and ways to protect your hearing. This week is a key event for Deafness Forum which is the national coordinating body. Also people with hearing impairment can share their experiences and knowledge and help to create a greater understanding of their needs and aspirations.

Check out their event calendar for more details.

ACT Health Minister, Katy Gallagher MLA has also used this event to provide the community with tips to Protect yourself from long term hearing damage.

“Ways to protect your hearing include turning down the volume of IPods and MP3 players and getting better fitting ear pieces. As a general rule, if other people can hear your music, it probably is too loud.

“Take and wear earplugs when you go to noisy venues or when attending events such as concerts or motor racing. Wear earplugs or ear muffs when using noisy equipment around the house or at work.

“Don’t have music up too loud in your car as you may be causing damage to your ears without realising it,” Ms Gallagher said.
