Graphics of fatal accident to be shown at ACT Schools

Posted on July 29, 2009 by by valerirojas

“ACT Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Simon Corbell, and Chief Police Officer Michael Phelan have joined together to launch a new graphic display which will tour ACT schools to highlight the consequences of speeding, drink-driving and reckless behaviour to new drivers.” Report

This new initiative is called Real Decisions, Real Consequences and it shows a wrecked vehicle from a fatal collision which occurred in Canberra, Friday, June 13, 2008. The incident resulted in the death of 19-year-old Ben Taylor and the imprisonment of Ahmed Alzabbi.

“The driver, Ahmed Alzabbi, lost control of the vehicle and it spun 180 degrees before mounting the kerb and colliding with a concrete wall. Ahmed Alzabbi’s blood alcohol content (BAC) was 0.123.”

“Mr Corbell said the display aims to deliver a hard-hitting and highly visual reminder of the consequences of irresponsible decision-making.”

It is a good initiative from the ACT government, however young kids are already exposed to watching car accidents and deaths everyday, either on tv or online.

Hopefully this will help a lot but why isn’t the ACT gov and ACT Policing looking at what other States are doing to solve these issues?

Victoria Police just created a website to show map of road deaths in Victoria and they have also used Tweeter to post details of breath reading records. I am not saying use Google Maps or Tweeter as the only tools but use them as extra “free” tools to target all these issues.
