Police were alerted to reports of a vehicle travelling southbound in the northbound lanes of the Southern Freeway, Wollongong. Friday night (17 July).

Wollongong Highway Patrol officers spoke to a number of witnesses who allegedly saw a red Hyundai sedan drive over a distance of five kilometres in the wrong direction.

The vehicle was last seen to turn back and travel north. Police stopped the car a short time later at Balgownie and spoke to the female driver.

The 45-year-old local woman was breath tested and allegedly returned a positive reading. She was then taken to Wollongong Police Station where she underwent a breath analysis returning a reading of 0.175.
