The passing of a Gungahlin landmark… The G Spot

Posted on May 11, 2009 by by jr

The G Spot - Gungahlin

I received a sad SMS today (Sunday 10th May 2009)  from Andrew Dale, proprietor of the local Gungahlin landmark, “The G Spot”, that read:

“To all and sundry, Sunday night is the last stand for the g spot at the lakes. Come on down and have a drink with us as we say goodbye to the old girl. Cheers andrew

Over the years The G Spot had become a Gungahlin institution: a late night food van with a gourmet menu more than a cut above your typical fast food fare. A place to stop on the way home after a huge night out. A social venue for many Gungahlin locals. And the first food van in Australia to install Foxtel!

Many of the menu items had highly original names and inventive combination of ingredients (a sample taken verbatim from the menu):

  • Hot dogs
    • PLAIN DOG – with sauce
    • G DOG – 2 dogs, bacon & double cheese in a roll
    • PIG DOG – dog with sh*t loads of bacon & BBQ sauce
    • LOST DOG – dog with chips, cheese & gravy in a roll
    • SICK PUPPY – dog with cheese, onion, fresh tomato & our own gesus chilli
    • MAD DOG – 2 dogs, egg, bacon, slaw, cheese, onion & gravy in a tortilla
  • Bastards
    • CHEAP BASTARD – 1 bloody egg, some bacon in a roll with BBQ sauce
    • ORIGINAL BASTARD – 3 eggs, double bacon & BBQ sauce in a roll
    • CHEESY BASTARD – double cheese, double bacon & 3 eggs
    • FAT BASTARD – burger patty, 3 eggs, double bacon, double cheese a& BBQ sauce
    • CRAZY BASTARD – 2x patty’s, 2 eggs, fresh tomato, double bacon & cheese
  • Wraps
    • SURF’N'TURF – prime scotch fillet with creamy garlic prawns & salad in a tortilla
    • GARLIC PRAWN WRAP – creamy garlic prawns & salad with salad in a tortilla
    • HBLW – it’s a burger with the lot in a tortilla
    • SCOTCH FILLET WRAP – prime scotch fillet with egg, bacon, cheese & salad *pepper sauce available
    • SATAY CHICK WRAP – chicken fillet with cheese, onion, salad and satay sauce
    • CHICKEN CHIP WRAP – chicken chips with lettuce, tomato & honey mustard in a tortilla
    • MEAT LOVERS WRAP – scotch fillet, burger patty, bacon, cheese, onion and coleslaw
  • Other Specialities
    • Deep Fried Mars Bar or Kit Kat
    • The small cup, jumbo cup or cone of chips (with Gravy)
    • Mini Spring Rolls
    • Steamed Dimmies
    • Salt ‘n’ Pepper Squid

I had a long chat with Andrew and his wife Lee-Ann and things are not as grim as it would first appear. Andrew also runs Blake’s Restaurant at the Canberra City Bowling Club and has just recently bid on and won two tenders, one out at the airport, the other with a government agency… obviously as a family run enterprise they have limited resources and the Gungahlin site had to make way for the newer, potentially more profitable ventures.

I thought it would be worth capturing the festivities of the last night at the G-Spot and took photos throughout the last three hours of its operation.

See the photos as uploaded (unedited) on Google Picasa web albums.

The G-Spot was good 5-6 years ago. Their wraps (a burger in a tortilla) were wonderful on a late night out.
But in the mid-noughties, Andrew seemed to outsource the G-Spot, and the ingredients and staff all changed. It went downhill, and whenever I went there afterwards (and I lived in Palmerston, so there was ample chance) it disappointed.
Glad to see Andrew’s gone onto bigger and better things – he was always a highlight when he was there.

    @Dermott

Actually the original wraps were based on Lebanese bread, it was only later that Andrew converted over to tortillas because of (a) cost (b) longevity of stock and (c) certainty of supply – I know because this was a major of much debate I had with him at the time. I wasn’t a fan of the wraps once he went tortilla.

Regardless of who was on duty cooking, Andrew, Lee-ann or the crew – the 1/2 a Mongrel (which eventually became a “Cheap Bastard” on the menu) and the burgers in a bun were always good. Mind you I always insisted on both of them made with no sauce and english mustard instead.

Besides half the novelty of the G spot was the “experience”… I’ve updated the main article with some classic memorabilia – The “freeloader” card.
