New Civic park to be named in honour of Latin American multiculturalism

The Chief Minister has proposed that a park on Childers Street in Civic be known as the “Latin American Plaza” and dedicated to the celebration of multiculturalism.
Whilst the ACT Government media release was only released today, apparently on Monday 25th when the ceremony occurred, it was coincidentally the Argentine National Day “Revolución de Mayo”.
This got me thinking, apart from the high profile historic events and a few notable individuals how many Australians actually know about the extensive and rich history of Latin America?

That’s some good news.
“I hope the plaza will come alive with music and cultural celebrations on national days and other significant dates. Chief MInister
If it’s a latin park then there should be live music and celebrations every night, right?

thats a pretty good idea..
put us right in the area where we wont be seen much hahaha
in all seriousness though, why is this actually happening???
according to the article, there are only 1400 or so latin american born citizens here in the Capital.

Approximately 1444 Canberrans were born in Latin America.
But they all now have their families and like 50 kids each, so it must b a big population

why a park? a hall would have been more usefull.

@cw
I tend to agree, being personally involved with a number of community groups it is harder to find well located venues, at a reasonable prices, that don’t mandate the need for excessive insurance for public meetings.
I really need to see if there are any pictures/photos of this new plaza… the item I saw on TV news really didn’t show much at all.

yeah, I also went on google maps and used streetview..
if i saw the correct area, its suited really for things like the multicultural festival, or street fairs etc… not really for latin style ‘celebrations’
and like JR said, its the cost really….I know the Chilean community do their celebrations over at the old Yarralumla wool sheds every Sept for that reason, the cost..
