Instrument prices in australia
Posted on May 31, 2009 by by giorgio rojas
Why does it cost so much to buy an instrument in australia? In the US a top of the line drum kit costs around $ 3000, $4000, where as here a top of the line drum kit costs $7000 to $10.000. An awesome pair of congas in the US $1300, here $2000, an awesome bass guitar in the US $15000, here $5000. Its so hard for a musician to buy a new instrument here, they have to save their gig money for so long. If musicians bought their instruments from the US and got it shipped here it would be so much cheaper then buying it here. I bought a travel conga in the US and it cost me $150 here it would have cost me $250, I was so happy I bought it there, also a new cymbal that cost me $240 here they had it for $800. Rip off.
I think every muso should get their equipment from overseas. Go online and do your research.

There is no need for them to charge that much, its a rip off and they know it.
I play bass guitar and I have to pay over $50 per string, just ridiculous.

It happens with alot of stuff. Not just instruments..
got to remember, that the US is a much larger market, so they can sell alot more over there. When for them to sell here, they have to send it further and sell less volume. its all about the volume
I remember when i went to the US 3 years ago, I paid $40 for a pair of sneakers id have paid $160 for here, same with some cologne….I paid $35 over there for one that would have cost 3 times as much here..

Actuallym none of the stuff in the US is made in the US, it’s all made in Asia so really it should be cheaper to buy in Australia than the US.
Everything here is a rip off

not really, it shouldnt..
the shipping costs alone dont determine the cost..
think of it this way..
China manufacturers some pens, and sells to the US, who might order 10 million pens, maybe covering their shipping costs, Australia might only order 200k (Exagerated numbers im sure, but its to highlight the point) The US with their vast consumption numbers would get a lower unit price simply from the volume of purchase. The way Harvey Norman can offer a REAL low price for a particular item, when other smaller retailers sell the exact same item for a higher price.
