Canberra roo cull makes the international news … again
Posted on May 14, 2009 by by jr
The international media is starting to jump on the band wagon and attempting to pull on the heart strings around the world through reporting of the roo cull occurring at the Defence Majura range.
Already there are pictures such this this from the AP (via the BBC)

which are cleverly being used to evoke emotions and imagery similar to that of Guantanamo Prison; Private Camp X-Ray (via History Commons)

Just a year ago I impartially covered the roo cull in Belconnen via the CanberraVotes website and whilst a admire the tenacity of the protesters, I honestly think they are fighting a lost cause with their current court action.
If the Kangaroo over-population is as bad as it is claimed then ultimately Defence ought to be brought to account for their inaction. No matter which way you look at it, in the cold light of day, at some point in time controlling the Kangaroo population, most probably through a cull was inevitable, but perhaps not in the numbers we are allegedly seeing at the moment.
The ACT Department of Territory and Municipal Services offers A Pictorial Guide to the Kangaroo Culling Issue which discusses why reducing eastern grey kangaroo populations needs to be considered in some areas of the ACT, and a bevy of addtional information on Kangaroos in the ACT is also available on the Territory and Municipal Services website.

I propose a cull, but with BBQs.
Animal rights campaigners are barking up the wrong tree on this one. If they like roos so much, let them drive Macs Reef Road at sunset. And they can explain how a roo being hit by a Landcruiser is more humane than shooting them.

not just Macs Reef road..
I drive down William Hovell Drive and Parkes way every morning to work, and i see at least 9 kangaroos dead on the side of the road every day. Driving back home at nights (around 10pm) and driving up William Hovell drive, I see at least 2-3 Kangas crossing the road..

Did I mention the kangaroo my family and I saw a few months ago in my neighbour’s backyard? true story.

if the protesters want to stop the cull, tell me, what do they propose is the best alternative? leave the poor animals to eat all fodder, and starve to death? culling is very necessary to reduce the numbers and prevent terrible suffering and painful deaths.

I spoke to a fella from one of these protest groups yesterday – i say spoke, he was ranting and raving about how we should just leave nature alone to take its course. can we cull protesters?
