Mexican Swine Flu
Posted on April 27, 2009 by by Jonathon Reynolds
It is interesting how the internet has jumped on the current outbreak of the new Mexican Swine Flu.
Here is a time line complete with a Google outbreak map:Â http://trancy.net/h1n1/
There are even news aggregators: http://flackr.net/news/2009/04/24/160
Twitter is going viral (no pun intended): http://twist.flaptor.com/trends?gram=swine+flu&table=0&tz=10
This article from foreignpolicy.com is pointing out the spin and influence that Twitter is putting on the subject.
What other sources have people come across?

It is just amazing how people are using the net, isn’t it?
I just love the Google map link.
I found this facebook link, kind of silly though http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=2231653698&topic=89903&post=1707800
A few days ago Mexico put the confirmed toll at 20 dead, but 40 other fatalities were being probed, and at least 943 nationwide were sick from the suspected flu as well.
Hopefully it won’t kill as many people as the cholera virus did in 1991 in the americas.

Found this with regard to an analysis of 24 hours of Twitter activity regarding “swine flu”:

The author was attempting to find out where the authoritative sources of information were. Interesting tweeter network graph towards the end of his article.

Hysteria has always happened. The internet just allows it to be more distributed, and therefore more visible.
I don’t think it’s time to say “Twitter will cause the sky to fall” just yet

Flu-related (rather than network-related), it seems as though a lot of people are recovering from ‘swine flu’, and there’s a suitable medication widely available. It’s also not being categorised as a pandemic just yet either, but merely an outbreak.

is there such a thing as swine flu fun facts? being a mutated virus, how long till the next flu strain hits? and what damage will it cause next time around?

Squawk! The sky is falling! The sky is falling!
Flaming aside, pandemics (particularly flu-related ones) have been nature’s way of handling over-population for many thousands of years. And we all know that when man builds a better mousetrap, nature just builds a better mouse.
It’s saddening that people have died, but believe me, this ‘swine flu’ is not going to kill off civilisation as we know it. Unfortunately

L, I wasn’t making a comment of panic, panic! It is a living organism that is known to mutate often. once the swine flu has been contained, how long till the next superbug emerges? it appears that for the most part, these superbugs appear in environments that are ripe for pandemics, over populated, sure, but with a level of sub quality waste removal or squalor certainly.

As it has been for centuries. Not worth wasting good worrying time over it, I don’t think

oh, please? can’t we start jumping up and down now?
bit of a slow day….

You can, but you’ll have to call it calisthenics, not sheer panic. Sorry about that

was wondering today, is it called swine flu because whoever brought it overseas were swine?

I think this is the best preventive solution I have seen yet…

For those seeking an automatic entry in the annual Darwin Awards I believe trying the same thing with a standard plastic shopping bag will do the trick.
