It never ceases to amaze me how the media continue to spin “horrible” road tolls during holiday periods when more people are naturally using the roads. Through the law of simple averages the more people on the road the more likely there is to be an accident or death. I would dearly love to see properly normalised figures that compare the number of accidents in the non-holiday periods (when there is less traffic) to peak holiday times to see if there is a true accident/death correlation per 100,000 vehicle movements.

Yes, that is a good point and would be very interesting.

It is a good point, but I’m not sure it would achieve the desired effect. The holiday road tolls are announced to make people aware that they need to be careful. Yes, there will statistically be more road accidents/deaths during holiday periods, but the message is to make people aware of the increased traffic and the increased risk. I don’t generally approve of scaremongering, but in this case I think it’s justified.L

the reason that the tolls are so prevalent during holidays is that many people are driving to unknown road conditions. They may know the roads at home, but that doesn’t mean that they know all roads.
it is a good time to get their focus as well.
