Ainslie sexual assault – ACT

Posted on April 6, 2009 by by valerirojas

Another assault in Canberra this last weekend. The assault was in Ainslie during the early hours of Saturday (April 4).

Around 3.15am, the 22-year-old female victim was walking alone along Sherbrooke Street when she was approached from behind by a male who proceeded to sexually assault her.

The female managed to strike her attacker and run away, the male following her for a short distance before stopping as she approached a well lit area near Majura Road.

The victim described her attacker about 183cm (6’) tall, with short brown hair, and an athletic build. He was wearing grey track suit pants, a tight short-sleeve T-shirt and white slip-on tennis shoes.

Police wish to speak to a number of people who were in the area around the time of the incident, including two females who walked past the victim near the Ainslie Fire Station on the corner of Wakefield Avenue and Limestone Avenue, near the Ainslie Football Club, and a middle-aged man with tattoos up his arms who was riding a bicycle and provided her with directions.

Police are also looking to speak with three men travelling in a small white vehicle who offered the victim a ride near the North Ainslie Primary School shortly after the incident.

Anyone who may have any information regarding this assault, please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the website at www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

  3. I walk sometimes at that hour of the morning. That doesn’t mean I’m asking anybody to rape me.

Are you asking someone to rape you if you are out at 3:15 am?

What does the time of day have to do with anything?

  4. Dermott says:

Modern society is dangerous. Some people deal with that danger by convincing themselves that “bad stuff wont happen to me”. So they say “Bad stuff happened to that person, it must have been their own fault”.
It’s displacing the responsibility for the problem, and blaming victims for things that happen to them.
There’s nothing wrong with walking down Sherbrooke Street at 3am. There is something wrong with sexual assault.

What I meant before was that now with all this assaults happening in Canberra people should be aware of all this crasy people around, wether you like it or not it is the truth, walking at those hours of the night is asking for trouble. Canberra is not like before, there is a lot of bad people out there and this people don’t sleep at night, you have to be careful.

  6. I’m not giving up my freedom. If something bad happens, so be it. I’d rather die on my feet than live on my knees.

So it’s not my fault if I get raped in broad daylight as does happen … hellooo … but if I like to walk by myself at night it’s my fault?

This sort of attitude makes me really angry, apart from being completely deficient in logic.

Why don’t you explain for me exactly what circumstances of rape are the woman’s fault – just so I can be really clear – and which ones are the rapist’s fault?

  7. Loquacity says:

el zorro: so it’s OK for a man to walk around at 3am? Or is it OK for a woman to walk around at 3am provided they aren’t drunk on their way home from a party? Is it OK for a man to walk home drunk from a party at 3am? At exactly what point will you start the blaming the perpetrator of the crime instead of the victim?

I am absolutely certain that this poor woman did not see the man approaching her and yell out “Hello there! I’m drunk and walking home from a party at 3am. Would you like to rape me? Here, I’ll lift my skirt for you”. And, of course, men can not be expected to control those sexual urges when women walk past. They *have* to rape them! It’s instinct! You can’t hold some poor bloke responsible for doing what comes naturally!

And people say we don’t live in a rape culture.

    Grow up.

  8. Maybe we should have a curfew. The only question is what time …? It gets quite dark after sunset. Maybe all women should be indoors after dark, and if not they could be arrested for inciting to rape.

Then you would only have to worry about male victims of crime being bashed and mugged and robbed and so forth.

But I guess if that got to be their fault for being there the curfew could be applied to them also.

I think the crime statistics would fall in no time.
